The United Black Student Unions of California has a 48 year history of providing leadership and motivational activities for high school students in Northern, Central, and Southern California regions.

High school Black Student Unions send student delegations to highlight their BSUs progress in learning about college admission, political and social trends, networking, and personal, academic, and character development.

Started in Southern California in 1973, the organization joins Black Student Union clubs around the state in local, regional and state-wide activities. The goals of the UBSUC are to cultivate leadership, to encourage young adults to make meaningful contributions to the world, and to aid these students in preparing for college and careers.  Each region holds a Regional Conference or a series of area-wide activities where the delegates come together for a statewide convention each spring.  The conventions are held at hotels in the sponsoring region.  They begin with a cultural activity on Friday night, continue with college campus visits, workshops a delegate assembly and scholarship banquet on Saturday and conclude with installation of officers and a Rites of Passage Celebration for graduating seniors on Sunday.

The UBSUC is governed by a Constitution and By-Laws. A Creed has been adopted and the organization has garnered proclamations and commendations from assembly-members, mayors and other state and local officials.  The Organization is run by an Executive board composed of Adult and Student Officers.  Currently the existing adult board boasts over 112 years of combined service to the students in the Union.

In March of 2020, the Convention moves to the Torrance Marriott for a three day assembly. Included in the activities will be a day on local university campus yet to be determined where students will be greeted a university official, work with college students, and end with a campus tour.  Workshops and the delegate assembly will be held on the campus.

Santa Monica High School’s BSU has participated in the UBSUC for five years. The current Student Body President at Samohi currently serves as the 1st Vice President of the UBSUC State Student Board.
